Once upon a time I was falling in love
Now I'm only falling apart
Nothing I can do
Total eclipse of the heart

Major Update: Drupal

Submitted by TDobes on Saturday, September 4, 2004 - 9:01pm

Uhmmmmmm... What's going on here? What happened to my web site? (obligatory Homestar quote)

The primary choir web site has recently undergone a significant behind-the-scenes update. We've switched from the old version of phpwebsite we've been running since early 2003 to a new (not even released yet) version of Drupal. As I've been putting a bit of effort into improving Drupal lately, it was only a matter of time before I finally took the plunge and made the changeover. ...read more...

Several changes to organization have occurred with the changeover:

  • New navigation links at the top and bottom of the page
  • Better forums
  • Concerts will now be integrated with the main site (once I get around to converting them)
  • The photo gallery is (temporarily) a separate site. Drupal's image.module is far too weak for our purposes at the moment, so I'm stuck with Gallery.
  • The "upcoming events" calendar is gone... Drupal's event.module is also too weak for our purposes (no end time, no all day events, no repeating events, no week/day/year views, etc.)... I'm going to try and port phpws' calendar to Drupal soon.
  • "Funny Choir Stories" has been removed. Matt wasn't getting any new stories submitted, so that somehow didn't make things quite as funny as I had envisioned. If you want to be funny, go do so in the forums. Smile
  • Many more smileys... hooray for emoticons! Laugh
  • HTMLArea is now used for comment composition... this should make posting styled messages much easier for those who aren't HTML-savvy. Note that it only works in IE 6, and Mozilla 1.5+ (this includes Firefox and Camino). As I understand it, Safari will be supported in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) If HTMLArea annoys you (I prefer to write plain HTML, myself), you can disable it in "my account."
  • You can now send private messages to other users on the site.
  • You can now subscribe to all posts... not just forum topics. Note that all old subscriptions are gone, however.
  • Forum topics can no longer be created by anonymous users. You need to log in. Also, any forum replies made by anonymous users needs be approved by me (or someone else who's an admin) before it appears. These changes were intentional to prevent inappropriate posts (i.e. spam, cursing, cutting down other students). From now on, I do not plan on censoring or deleting posts... as a registered user, you can post whatever you want... but it will be identified that it was YOU who posted.
  • Each registered user can now maintain a personal blog (like a LiveJournal or Xanga)... we'll see if anyone uses this. If not, I'll turn it off.
  • Registered users can also specify which choir they're in or were in, to be included in a directory listing... for example, we can see a list of all past and present Vocalteens. Update your directory entry by going to "my account" then clicking on the "edit" tab.
  • The site now is valid XHTML!
  • URL's are now much cleaner... rather than something icky like http://www.merrillvillechoir.com/mod.php?mod=userpage&menu=1003&page_id=5 we now have the much-more-readable http://www.merrillvillechoir.com/concerts/2002-2003/spring. Does this matter to anyone other than me? probably not... but I appreciate it nonetheless. It will help with our Google ranking, if nothing else.
  • All old URL's have been set up with a redirector script that will send users to the appropriate new URL. Old bookmarks and links will continue to work.
  • Weblinks have been temporarily removed. They should reappear soon.
  • There are probably other changes which I can't remember at the moment.
I'm still working on finishing up the updates, and will soon roll out a "new look" for the site. In the meantime, let me know if you find anything broken... leave a comment to this post or send me an e-mail. Stay tuned. P.S. Does anyone have any other suggestions for things I should change or fix? Leave a comment.
