Congrats everyone!

Submitted by Jacqueline on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 - 8:58pm General Choir Chat
Hey everyone! I just wanted to congratulate all the people who tried out for Velveteens, Choralteens, and Vocalteens and made it. Good job! Next year is going to be awesome! And for the people who didn't make it: Don't worry! There's always next year! Just do your best with what you have and great things will happen!

you know what i find rather odd...how who made choral and vocal teens...if you look at mhs alumni people who were in choir and you know them...how i find it so odd that their younger brother or sister made choral and vocal teens now and that they as in alumni were in choral teens as well...i find that rather odd don't you?????????? Oh did you notice that on the booster's club all of their kids are in choral teens...and if not all of them most of them are....hmmm it just makes me wonder what choir is all about...

OK. First of all, I'd like to point out that it's only because I want to yell at you that I'm not deleting your post. I specifically said (as can be seen at the top of the Try-out Results announcement) that all comments should be directed to the choir directors.

That said, I will rebut the comments individually as follows:
  • You said: if you look at mhs alumni people who were in choir and you know them...how i find it so odd that their younger brother or sister made choral and vocal teens now and that they as in alumni were in choral teens as well
I respond: Yes. This is true in some cases. In other cases it may not be true. I would be willing to bet that this is the case because of several reasons:
    1. These younger siblings have seen all the fun their older sisters / brothers have had in choir, but have also seen the amount of work their older brothers and sisters put in, so they understand the amount of time it takes to get into one of our upper choirs.
    2. These younger siblings may have also started becoming familiar with music at an earlier age. Perhaps their "choir alumni" family started them singing at a younger age, so they are more experienced than someone who may have started singing as a freshman.
    3. Most likely, their family is musically inclined. Their parents may have encouraged that they take lessons for a musical instrument as a young child. Typically, parents who encourage this for one child also encourage it for others. Perhaps, because of genetics or upbringing, it is easier for them to distinguish intervals or memorize dance steps or do any number of other things that are considered when holding try-outs.
  • You said: Oh did you notice that on the booster's club all of their kids are in choral teens
I respond: ABSOLUTELY ANY CHOIR PARENT is free to join choir boosters. The MHS Choir Boosters is not an exclusive organization that only limits membership to certain parents. If your parents are interested in joining, they should show up to meetings. It's that simple. Any parent's lack of membership is due to a choice that they made themselves. We, in fact, encourage membership from parents of students in Concert Choir, Varsity Choir, and Velveteens because there are very few in boosters. I believe that the first meeting was well-advertised in every class, and you were given paperwork to take home regarding boosters. If not, I know for certain that I advertised it quite a bit here on the web site. Did your parents get that paperwork? Do they know the web site address? I'd be willing to bet that nearly every booster member actually got that paperwork from their son or daughter, or at least their son or daughter told them about the meeting.
  • You said: hmmm it just makes me wonder what choir is all about...
I respond: Choir is all about singing! It doesn't take a genius to figure that out... it seems pretty obvious to me. With that, it should also be said that you are in choir to sing no matter what choir you are in. You're obviously posting this here to vent about the fact that you didn't get into the group for which you were hoping. You were incredibly depressed or angry or emotional in some way about what you view as a failure (not getting into the choir you wanted), so you externalized the blame and placed it on those who make the decisions. Well, I'm telling you that those decisions are made for a reason... not a petty, insignificant reason like siblings' membership or parents' booster involvement, but a real, legitimate reason like singing ability, dancing ability, or classroom behavior. Choir is definitely not about posting defamatory messages on the message board simply because you're in a bad mood. You have no room whatsoever to insult either of our directors in this way. If you had any appreciation whatsoever of the amount of time they put in, above and beyond what being a normal high school teacher requires, you'd be a lot less likely to accuse them in this fashion.
Rather than trying to blame someone else and point an accusational finger, you really should be looking forward to next year. No matter what group you ended up in, you should be happy. The choir program as a whole here at MHS is an extremely strong program. You should be proud of that. Every group does good music that the audience enjoys at concerts. You should be proud of that too.

Contrary to popular belief, the goal of try-outs is NOT to try sort people by their relative talent in music. Instead, students are placed in choirs based on which choir they can learn the most in. Each choir's goal is to teach certain skills to students as the year progresses. You are in whatever choir you ended up in for a reason. Perhaps you need help in a particular area which that class focuses on. Perhaps you have a particular talent that would be beneficial to that group. Either way, there's very little you can do to change it, so you should just accept it and move on. Posting something like this here is only going to make people angry at you. It already made me angry at you, and I don't even know who you are.

So, on that note, I'm done yelling at you. I'm truly sorry if you didn't get into the group you were hoping to get into, but coming here and posting this type of message is totally inappropriate. You've certainly soured the mood with your reply to a kind-spirited message. Also, your sentence syntax is simply terrible. If you post another message slandering others like this, I'll make an effort to banning your computer from the forums entirely.

-Tom-

To everyone else who read this: I'm sorry to have wasted your time with a long rant. I just wanted to make it clear that this person's accusations were completely ungrounded and out-of-line. I do check these forums daily and I will not permit this sort of thing in the future.

Thanks for the support, Tom!

Let me respond to "inappropriate message" in behalf of the choir boosters officers. The officers are nominated and elected by the choir boosters themselves.
The Choir Boosters attempt to invite parents from all choirs. The beginning of the year pot-luck is an open invitation to ALL interested parents-to join and participate in the Choir boosters. In fact, election of officers will be at the next and last meeting for this year. ANY PARENT of a choir member can be nominated and elected. All parents are invited! Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the choir room at 7pm. Please invite your parent(s) to the meeting!!

Tom-
I'd like to say that you didn't waste my time by posting that extremely long reply. I got a good laugh out of it and so did my mom! I'm done with choir next year. Y'all are gonna have a HORRIBLE year if all you do is bicker about one thing or another. Don't start the year that way.
